no mater which kind of a scanning microscope, you can always set operating parameters mostly through its control software, just like what you have done in setting scan distance, scan speed... in addition, you can also read out values of these parameters or even more such as tunneling current (for a real STM) from the software interface.

it is the operator to tell a machine how and in which way to behave itself.
