Abstract.

The lattice parameters of Ni3Al have been determined accurately for the temperature range 25 to 594 degrees C by a high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction method. These data are used to evaluate the coefficients of thermal expansion at various temperatures. The thermal expansion of Ni3Al has also been measured from 25 to 1000 degrees C by a dilation method. The thermal expansion values obtained by the dilation method are in good agreement with those determined by the X-ray diffraction method at around room temperature, but the agreement deteriorates with increase in temperature.

Abstract.

The classicaland and ab initio molecular dynamic (MD) simulation of the thermal expansion coefficient of the Ni3Al alloy has been performed in the temperature interval 300 - 1500 K with the increment δT = 100 K. The obtained results are compared with the experiment. It is found the classical MD overestimate and the ab initio MD underestimate the experimental results. The results of ab initio simulation is more close to the experiment without any adjustable parameters but it is very timeconsuming.

Abstract

Thermal expansion measurements on enhanced paramagnetic and weakly ferromagnetic Ni3Al and Ni - Pt alloys were performed with a three-terminal capacitance method in the temperature interval 4.2 to 12 K. The ferromagnetic alloys contract with increasing temperatures due to a large magnetic contribution to the thermal expansion. The thermal expansion of the paramagnetic alloys increases at approaching the critical concentration. The electron contribution to the thermal expansion has a peaked behaviour around the critical concentration for ferromagnetism.

Es werden thermische Ausdehnungsmessungen an enhanced paramagnetischen und schwach ferromagnetischen Ni3Al- und Ni - Pt-Legierungen mit einer Drei-Kontakt-Kapazitäts-Methode im Temperaturintervall 4,2 bis 12 K durchgeführt. Die ferromagnetischen Legierungen kontrahieren mit zunehmender Temperatur infolge eines großen magnetischen Beitrags zur thermischen Ausdehnung. Die thermische Ausdehnung der paramagnetischen Legierungen nimmt bei Annäherung an die kritische Konzentration zu. Der Elektronenbeitrag zur thermischen Ausdehnung hat ein Maximum bei der kritischen Konzentration für Ferromagnetismus.

Abstract

Experiments on Ni3Al and Ni-Pt alloys near the critical concentration for ferromagnetism show a marked difference in the low temperature thermal expansion between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic alloys. The thermal expansion data are compared with the results obtained in other magneto-volume studies.
