This extraordinary novel sold over three million copies in its original Chinese edition, titled "A Muslim's Funeral." The story spans three generations of a family engaged in the jade carving business. But it is so much more. If you liked The Good Earth" you will absolutely love "The Jade King." It might be described as an urban variation of Pearl Buck's rural, Nobel winning classic. It also provides rich insights into the lives of a surprisingly large number of Chinese Muslims who are embedded in Han culture. Why this book did not become an international best seller is a puzzle. The English translation is long out of print and hard to find. But it's worth every effort to locate a copy.
