I think the last sentence should read as "不存在使得......的开集”. Don't miss the comma ,. If that's the case, how do we understand this sentence? Suppose there is an open set V in R2 including the point f(0). Then it will look like a disk or a square around f(0). Then the intersection of V and S1 will be an arc in S1 enclosing f(0) which includes one part above f(0) and one part below f(0). But the intersection is not an open set in S1 since the open set in S1 cannot across f(0). The open set in S1 can only be [f(0), p), where p is a point on the circle, or (p,q), where p and q are two points on the circle, but q is always after p, and both points cannot pass f(0). This is my understanding and l'm not sure whether it's correct or not.

Okay. Point passing a point does not make sense at all. I think you understand it. That's fine. I meant the arc cannot include f(0). It's good you got what l mean.
