[交流] 美国乔治梅森大学Kang Research Lab招博士生——二维材料方向

[Introduction of George Mason University]
George Mason University is the largest public research university in the U.S. state of Virginia. The university was founded in 1957. Four campuses are located in Virginia, with another in Songdo, South Korea inside the Incheon Free Economic Zone. The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education recognized GMU as a R1 (Doctoral Universities – Highest research activity) research institution. Mason faculty have twice won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics.
George Mason University is located in the major location of DC area. PhD graduates take many opportunities to get a job in various fields including U.S. National Research Lab (NASA, NIST, NRL, etc.) and Industries (1) U.S. Defense Contractors including Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, 2) Aerospace Industrial Corporation including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, etc. 3) Profit or non-profit Management & Consulting Company including MITRE, Accenture, General Dynamics). Currently, engineering school undergraduate and graduates have been building their successful careers in such various fields.

[Introduction of Kang Research Lab at George Mason]
The Kang Lab in the department of Mechanical Engineering at George Mason University conducts research with fundamental studies on Micro and Nano Scale Mechanics and Photonics with Atomically-Thin Materials (a.k.a Two-Dimensional Materials such as graphene and Transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers such as MoS2 atomic layers.).  Based on the studies, we research and develop flexible, wearable nano bio sensors and environmental sensors. We’ve been collaborating for intriguing research and various applications with researchers in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, school of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, Department of Physics at Korea University, Department of Physics at George Mason University, Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science(KRISS), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). With those efforts, we’ve published high impact journals including Nature Scientific Reports, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, Nanoscale, Langmuir, Microelectronic Engineering, 2D Materials, and so on.

[Introduction of Research in the Kang Lab]
Dr. Pilgyu The Kang Research Lab at the George Mason University pursues scientific advancements and engineering innovations based on the fundamental studies of mechanics and optics at micro and nano scale. The main objective of research is to create high performance materials with new functionalities in mechanical, optical, and electrical properties. The main approach for creating such functionalities is nanostructuring of nanomaterials by using micro nano scale manufacturing and fabrication techniques. Nanomaterials explored include atomically-thin two dimensional materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers such as MoS2 atomic layers as well as photonic materials such as silicon and dielectrics. Based on the approach, he explores various fields including nano-photonics, opto-fluidic, optoelectronics, and plasmonics to achieve high performance materials and devices for nano-bio sensors. Furthermore, we conduct various intriguing state-of-the-art research on flexible and wearable Nano Bio sensing technology and device applications. We welcome all of you who have various educational background and research experiences in electrical engineering, chemical engineering, bioengineering, and materials engineering in addition to mechanical engineering.

[Ongoing Research Projects]
1) Environmental & Electrochemical Sensing Technology and Nano Biosensor Device Applications based on Microporous Materials and hybrid nanomaterials.
2) Flexible and Wearable Nano Bio Sensing Technology and Device Applications based on Nanostructured Atomically-Thin Materials.
3) Photonic and Plasmonic Nano Bio Sensing Technology and Device Applications based on Nanostructured Heterogenous Bilayer Atomically-Thin Materials.
