1. To address the issue of salt of p-toluenesulfonate, we did a model reaction with 2-naphthol, adenine and a benzaldehyde as the reactants in two parallel experiments: one with base neutralization, and one without. The yields are 80.3 and 80.0%, respectively, showed little difference. Since the amount of catalyst is very small, it is our view that there is no need to neutralize the reaction.
2. For some reactions with moderate yields, it is because that the reactants did not participate the reaction, as shown with TLC analysis. Prolong the reaction time up to 72 hrs did not improve the yields. Therefore the reactions were stopped. |
