PhD Position in Carbon Dioxide/Materials Chemistry
Applications are invited for a PhD position at the newly established Center of Excellence in Carbon Dioxide Activation (CADIAC) at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO), Aarhus University, Denmark. An important requirement is that the applicant has or is in the process of obtaining a grant from the China Scholarship Council (CSC) which from our side will be supplemented with an equally large grant.
The aim of this PhD study is to identify fundamentally new chemistry for the activation of carbon dioxide, thereby providing sustainable solutions for the exploitation of this molecule as a valuable reagent to high-value chemicals of industrial importance. This will be achieved by the design of new types of homogeneous catalysts based on main group elements and transition metals. Particular focus will be on the material platforms onto which the catalysts will be immobilized, thereby facilitating product purification and recyclability of the catalysts. In addition, some supports are aimed at increasing conversion rates of CO2 by purposely trapping the gas chemically in the vicinity to the catalyst.
In the CADIAC center various catalysis programs will be pursued to achieve our goals for CO2 activation These include (1) homogeneous catalysis with transition metal and main group element catalysts, (2) carbon supports for catalyst integration, (3) 2D material stacking catalysts, and (4) hybrid organic-inorganic catalysts. A key objective will be to assemble ideal catalysts with material platforms into structurally new catalytically active entities that can promote CO2 conversion processes more efficiently and which are less energetically demanding.
Potential candidates should have experience and expertise in at least one of the following areas:
• CO2 chemistry.
• Surface chemistry.
• Synthesis of polymers and porous materials.
• Surface analysis (AFM, XPS, SIMS, and SEM) and gas adsorption techniques.
Furthermore, applicants are expected to:
• Have strong cooperation and communication skills.
• Have good command of the English language, both spoken and written. • Be independent and capable of working in large teams.
