Postdoc in optical fiber communications/networks
Job description: Professor Alan Pak Tao Lau from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University is now looking for a postdoc working on optical communications and networks with a focus on physical layer aspects, digital signal processing and machine learning.
About the supervisor: Professor Alan Pak Tao Lau obtained the B.A.Sc and M.A.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto in 2003 and 2004 respectively. He then obtained the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University in 2008. He also worked at NEC Labs America in 2006 as a research associate in the Optical Networking Division. He is currently a Full Professor in Hong Kong Polytechnic University and his current research interests spans from theoretical to experimental research in digital signal processing and machine learning techniques for Tb/s coherent transmission links, physical-layer aware mesh dynamic networking, distributed fiber sensing systems, high-speed optical devices characterizations as well as fundamental science and applications of nonlinear fiber optics. Over the past decade, Prof. Lau¡¯s group has regularly demonstrated World record-breaking experiments in few-mode amplifiers, new fiber types, transceiver structures, silicon photonics devices as well as signal processing techniques pushing the limits of transmission speed and distance. He also collaborates extensively with the industry such as Alibaba, Huawei, Corning, NEC etc on high-impact research for industry commercialization. Prof. Lau also serves as associate editor of Journal of Lightwave Technology and committee chairs of various international conferences such as OFC.
What we offer:
• At least 30000 HKD monthly salary.
• 12 working days paid annual leave.
• State-of-the-art experimental facilities for high bandwidth multi-band long-haul and short-reach transmissions and mesh networks.
• Deployed fiber link across Hong Kong for distributed fiber sensing and short-reach field trials.
• High impact research and close collaboration with various optical communications industries and internationally recognized research institutes.
• If desired, close working environment with supervisor and personalized plan for developing essential technical/non-technical skill sets for a career in Academia or Industry.
Qualifications:
• A doctoral degree with relevant research in Optics/communications/signal processing/Machine Learning.
• Experience in optical transmission experiments preferred.
• Self-motivated, willing to learn new things.
