Activities and responsibilities Your responsibilities: The role of the plant nutrient magnesium in the opening and closing of the leaf stomata is to be investigated within a project funded by the German Research Foundation. The work will shed light on the relevance of magnesium for the activity of the plasmalemma-ATPase, photosynthesis, and carbon storage in the guard cells of the field bean (Vicia faba L.). Your task is to investigate whether these processes affect the opening and closing of stomata or the gas exchange between the leaf and atmosphere as function of magnesium availability. To do so, you will cultivate field beans hydroponically, isolate guard cells, extract chloroplasts from guard cells, and quantify plant nutrients. You will use modern in vivo microscopy techniques to ratiometrically analyse pH in the leaf apoplast and measure photosynthetic electron flow of single cells. You will also be involved in collaborative work to identify and quantify metabolites (Max-Planck-Institut of Molecular Plant Physiology, Potsdam-Golm) and proteins (KU Leuven, Belgien) of guard cells. Qualification profile What is expected: Above-average scientific degree (Master‘s or Diplom) in biology, agricultural sciences, horticultural sciences, life sciences or similar fields of study Knowledge in plant physiology or plant nutrition or biochemistry or molecular biology with focus on plants Good command of English (oral and written) Independent, structured, cooperative and careful way of working Good presentation and strong organisational skills Team-minded person We offer Competent supervision and the opportunity to participate in training events Personal scope for creativity and independent work If you meet the requirements of the public service pay, you will be paid up to public pay scale 13 of the Tarifvertrag Hessen (TV-H-66%) You live and work in a beautiful wine-growing region with a great landscape and good connections to Frankfurt.
