Master Thesis - Inverse Design Metasurface (f/m/d)
Temporary, Full-time ¡¤ VILLACH
Your future responsibilities
During the past decades, metamaterial has shown great potential in the field of optical acoustic material science and so on benefiting from the fantastic properties beyond the natural materials.
Inverse design can transform a traditional design into an automatic optimization design based on a mathematical model for obtaining high-performance functionalities, exploring novel topological features, and even discovering new physical mechanisms, allowing it to break through or overcome the limitations of artificial and empirical designs.
Inverse metamaterial design has been demonstrated for versatile wave and mechanical response, including high-performance photonic waveguide, filter, MMI and metasurfaces, and so on. The future development of this field requires reverse design. Through topology optimization and machine learning, our goal is to develop large-scale, multi-functional, layered metamaterials with customized functional characteristics.
We have designed many metalenses with regular shapes, and aim to further improve the overall performance through simulation and deep learning.
Specific optimization methods are based on our previous design. A mathematical figure of merit is used to describe the quality of a device's performance (FOM). The design method entails running a forward simulation of Maxwell¡¯s equations for a specific configuration of the scatterers to calculate the FOM, and back-propagating through the physical equations to optimize the FOM and, subsequently the device¡¯s performance, by updating the geometry. From other research1 we can see that we can get a breakthrough in the structure of our cognition, to achieve better performance.
Your profile
Bachelor¡¯s degree in the field of optical sciences, physics, electrical engineering, or a similar field
Experience with the optical design using standard design software such as Lumerical, CST, or HFSS
Experience in programming Python, Matlab, knowledge in machine learning would be welcomed.

About us
Silicon Austria Labs (SAL) is a top research center for Electronic Based Systems (EBS). At three locations (Graz, Villach, Linz), SAL is conducting research along the entire EBS value chain in the areas of sensor systems, power electronics, RF (radiofrequency) systems, system integration and embedded systems to develop future-oriented solutions for industrial production, health, energy, mobility, safety and more. SAL brings together key players from industry, science and research and thus valuable expertise and know-how and conducts cooperative, application-oriented research along the value chain. Cooperative projects are co-financed by SAL and enable a fast and unbureaucratic project start. SAL is thus shaping the high-tech location Austria and Europe and developing the future Innovation is our top priority and so are our employees. We are a family-friendly company and support the compatibility of work and family as much as possible. That is why we have been awarded the Work and Family Certificate until 2023. But we are constantly working on new measures to offer our employees an environment where they feel good, healthy and motivated.
