Prof. An Wang's group at Stevens Institute of Technology is recruiting 1-2 PhD students starting in 2022 Spring or 2022 Fall. These positions will be fully funded. Possible research areas include but not limited to: wave-structure interaction, bio-inspired propulsion/maneuvering, hydroelastic slamming, actively controlled fluid-structure interaction and marine energy harvesting. Potential candidates should have strong academic background in engineering and/or science field and be highly motivated to perform high-quality research. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the research group, candidates of all STEM majors (for example, naval architecture, ocean/civil/hydraulic/mechanical/aerospace engineering, mechanics, physics, etc.) are welcome. Hands-on experiences, such as design, instrumentation, programming, data/image processing, are preferred. Experiences on fluid dynamics research (experimental, theoretical or computational) are preferred but not required. Candidates should have a bachelor's degree (or above) at the time of enrollment. Good publication record is preferred but not required.

Dr. An Wang (https://faculty.stevens.edu/awang38) joined the Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology as an assistant professor in 2021 Fall. Prior to joining Stevens, he was a postdoc fellow at University of Maryland, College Park. He received his BE in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Maryland, College Park. In his research, Dr. Wang uses various experimental techniques to investigate fundamental and critical problems in naval hydrodynamics, ocean engineering, free surface flows and fluid-structure interactions. Dr. Wang's research aims at understanding the physical mechanisms and exploring their potential applications in areas such as slamming, marine robotics, bio-inspired propulsion/maneuvering and marine renewable energy. These research objectives are also integrated with rigorous experimental design and advanced measurement/analysis techniques. Dr. Wang's research has been published in Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physical Review Fluids, Journal of Ship Research, etc. The group has access to the unique high-speed towing tank at Davidson Laboratory (https://www.stevens.edu/research ... davidson-laboratory), which is a renowned research institute in the area of ship hydrodynamics and ocean/coastal engineering. The tank is equipped with one of the world's fastest towing carriage (about 30 m/s) and a programmable wave generation system. Smaller experimental facilities for high-precision measurements are forthcoming at Dr. Wang's group. More information about Dr. Wang's research can be found at his  his group webpage.


Stevens Institute of Technology is a private research university in Hoboken, New Jersey. The campus is located by the Hudson River next to Manhattan of New York City.
