西交利物浦大学-南京大学-江苏产研院联合招生全额奖学金博士生。
PI: Yunchang Xin, Professor of Nanjing Univ. and Yangtze Delta Region Institute of Advanced Materials. His main research interests involve the plastic deformation behavior and hardening mechanisms of hexagonal close-packed materials e.g. magnesium and titanium alloys, combining the use of electron-microscopy and crystal plasticity simulations. He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed scientific papers in Acta Materialia, Scripta Materialia, International Journal of Plasticity and so on, which are citied more than 3000 times. He has held many important projects including 4 foundation from National Natural Science Foundation of China. He is the fellows of many academic society in China and is the editorial board member of Journal of Materials Science and Technology.
Requirements:
The candidate should have a first class or upper second class honours degree, or a master’s degree (or equivalent qualification), in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, material engineering or any other related engineering subject.
Evidence of good spoken and written English is essential. The candidate should have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above, if the first language is not English. This position is open to all qualified candidates irrespective of nationality.
Degree:
The student will be awarded a PhD degree from the University of Liverpool (UK) upon successful completion of the program.
Funding:
The PhD studentship is available for three years subject to satisfactory progress by the student. The award covers tuition fees for three years (currently equivalent to RMB 80,000 per annum) and provides a monthly stipend of 5,000 RMB as a contribution to living expenses. It also provides up to RMB 16,500 to allow participation at international conferences during the period of the award. It is a condition of the award that holders of XJTLU PhD scholarships carry out 300-500 hours of teaching assistance work per year. The scholarship holder is expected to carry out the major part of his or her research at XJTLU in Suzhou, China. However, he or she is eligible for a research study visit to the University of Liverpool of up to three months, if this is required by the project.
Project Description:
There are comprehensive deformation modes for hexagonal close-packed materials, including twinning, basal slip, non-basal slip and so on and the plastic deformation behavior is very complex. The activation and selection of deformation modes are related to not only the external stress, but the internal stress accumulation. The present project addresses the twinning and slip behavior under uniaxial or multi-axial loadings using synchrotron radiation and neutron diffraction. The main aim is to build the quantitative relation between the activation of plastic deformation behavior and internal stress.
