4.3 Manuscript submission
4.3.1. Manuscript categories
We will consider initial Original Article and Review Article submissions in which the manuscript file is not formatted according to the Cardiovascular Research template.
All elements must be completed within the online submission form including manuscript title, author names, affiliations, and address (including email).
Manuscript file must contain page numbers and figures may be embedded within the manuscript or in separate files.
Supplementary Material files must be uploaded separately.
The manuscript must contain ethical statements regarding living subjects and follow the key guidelines for experimental design outlined within this document (e.g. minimal n numbers and rules for research reporting). Further information.
Please note, manuscripts will undergo technical checks of figures and figure legends. Upon request, authors should be prepared to provide high-resolution figures separately, in a common image format (e.g. tif, jpg).
Those papers that are revised or ultimately accepted will be required to be formatted by the authors according to Cardiovascular Research format requirements.
4.3.2 Cardiovascular Research Formatting Instructions for revised/accepted manuscripts
Authors must format their manuscript using:
Line numbers
Page numbers
Numbered sub-headings
The abstract and manuscript files must be in an editable format for typesetting, such as .doc or .docx.
(i) Cover Letter. This first page of the manuscript submission file must contain:
The manuscript title that must be informative, conveying a clear message on the major findings of the study and be no more than 120 characters in length including spaces.
A short title must also be provided that is no more than 50 characters
The names of all authors including first name, department where the work was performed, all authors\' affiliations, name of corresponding author with address, telephone number, fax and e-mail. Current addresses of any authors who have moved since the work was finished must also be provided
The category of the manuscript
Total word count of the manuscript
During online submission, the submitting author must provide the contact information of all authors. The Editorial Office will notify all co-authors about the submission via email. On acceptance of the work, the corresponding author will sign a copyright form on behalf of all authors.
(ii) Response to Reviewers’ Letter. Itemised response to all reviewers’ and editors’ comments given in the authors’ decision letter. Please provide one marked-up manuscript and one clean version.
(iii) Abstract. For Original Articles, the abstract must be 300 words or less and structured into the subsections "Aims," "Methods and Results" and "Conclusion(s)".
(iv) Introduction. This section must clearly position the study with regard to current knowledge, provide a rationale for the current work, and state its expected contribution to the field.
(v) Methods. To reduce a lengthy methods section, experimental details (buffer compositions, primer sequences, etc.) may be included in a separate supplementary file for online publication. However, each method must be briefly described and appropriately referenced in the main article.
The correct ethical statements and a description of the statistical analysis and adherence to the Journal guidelines must be included in the main article.
(vi) Results. For presentation of data, figures are preferred to tables. Extensive numerical data must appear in the legends to the figures rather than in the main body of text. The author must use SI units throughout.
(vii) Discussion. This section must summarize and highlight the novel findings and position them with regard to current knowledge and future studies. Limitations must be acknowledged here. The editorial team encourages authors to include a schematic drawing that illustrates the new mechanistic insights of the study. The conclusions must provide a clear perspective to the findings.
(viii) Funding. The author must give details of all funding sources for the work in question in a separate section entitled \'Funding\'. The authors must follow these rules:
The sentence must begin: ‘This work was supported by …’
The full official funding agency name must be given, i.e. ‘the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health’ or simply \'National Institutes of Health\' not ‘NCI\' (one of the 27 sub-institutions) or \'NCI at NIH’ (full RIN-approved list of UK funding agencies). Grant numbers must be complete and accurate and provided in brackets as follows: ‘[grant number ABX CDXXXXXX]\'.
Multiple grant numbers must be separated by a comma as follows: ‘[grant numbers ABX CDXXXXXX, EFX GHXXXXXX]’.
Agencies must be separated by a semi-colon (plus ‘and’ before the last funding agency).
Where individuals need to be specified for certain sources of funding the following text must be added after the relevant agency or grant number \'to [author initials]\'.
An example is given here: ‘This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health [AA123456 to C.S., BB765432 to M.H.]; and the Alcohol & Education Research Council [P50 CA098252 and CA118790 to R.B.S.R.].’
Note: Oxford University Press will deposit all NIH-funded articles in PubMed Central. Authors must clearly indicate that manuscripts are NIH-funded using the guidelines above.
Cross-ref Funding Data Registry: In order to meet your funding requirements authors are required to name their funding sources, or state if there are none, during the submission process. For further information on this process or to find out more about the CHORUS initiative please click here.
(ix) Author Contribution Statement. If there are more than 10 authors, a statement of the contribution of each to the study must be provided within the main text of the manuscript, following the Sources of Funding section. The journal adheres to the principles for authorship according to ICMJE.
The ICMJE recommends that authorship be based on the following 4 criteria:
Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; and
Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and
Final approval of the version to be published; and
Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.
In addition to being accountable for the parts of the work he or she has done, an author should be able to identify which co-authors are responsible for specific other parts of the work. In addition, authors should have confidence in the integrity of the contributions of their co-authors.
(x) Acknowledgements. This section must describe all relevant contributions of persons who are not a co-author on the manuscript. The journal adheres to the principles for authorship as outlined by ICMJE.
(xi) Conflict of Interest. All authors must declare any potential conflicts of interest. A detailed definition of conflicts of interests can be found here. The Journal requires:
An International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICJME) disclosure of potential conflicts of interest (COI) form to be submitted for each author. All completed ICMJE COI forms must be included when a revised manuscript is submitted. Each form must have the author\'s surname in the document name. Forms must be submitted even if there is no conflict of interest. It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to ensure that all authors adhere to this policy.
A formal statement in the manuscript indicating any potential conflict of interest that might constitute an embarrassment to any of the authors if it were not to be declared and were to emerge after publication. Such conflicts might include, but are not limited to, shareholding in or receipt of a grant or consultancy fee from a company whose product features in the submitted manuscript or which manufactures a competing product. This statement should summarise all details of any conflicts of interest included in the ICMJE COI form(s).
If none of the authors has a conflict of interest, then the following must be stated: ‘Conflict of Interest: none declared.’
(xii) References. Authors must refer to the format as illustrated: journal names must be abbreviated and in italics, volume numbers in bold, and page numbers must be fully written out. All authors must be listed. In-text citations must be numerical and superscripted. The number of references must not exceed 50. If referring to manuscripts that have not yet been published, either as in-press, or submitted elsewhere, a copy must be included for review by the Editors and the reviewers.

Abstract:
As a regular paper, but add (Abstract) at end.
(xi) Figure Legends. Figure legends must start on a new page of the manuscript, but one page may contain legends to more than one figure. Figure legends must include for each graph the number of animals/cells/observations and the statistical test applied. It is preferable that authors provide the exact P-value in the figure legend; rather than, P<0.05.
(xii) Figures/Tables. The journal allows a maximum of seven data figures on seven pages; an additional half-page figure highlighting in a schematic the major findings can be included. The data figures may have multiple panels but must be provided on a single page in portrait orientation at the expected print size. The author may upload additional figures within the supplement. Authors must attach figures must as a separate file(s) during the submission process and labelled (entitled "Figure 1", for example, in the box marked "Description" visible during submission). Electronically submitted figures must be of high resolution (300 dpi or greater) and in one of the following formats: tiff (.tif), bitmap (.bmp), jpeg (.jpg), portable data format (.pdf), or postscript (.ps or .eps). Any lettering in the figures must be large enough to stand photographic reduction. Authors must prepare their figures for either one column width (84 mm) or the entire page width (175 mm). The maximum height is 240 mm. The Publisher will determine the degree of any reduction or enlargement required and in general, line drawings will be reduced to one column width if possible.
Tables must be included in the manuscript file in an editable format for typesetting, such as .doc or .docx.
CVR does not charge for colour representation. Where colour is necessary for proper interpretation, such as for histology or immunostaining, authors must submit figures in colour. Authors are also encouraged to use colour in their graphs to improve the presentation of the data.
(xiii) Supplementary Data. Authors can submit supplementary material to support and enhance the manuscript. Supplementary files supplied will publish online alongside the electronic version of the article as uploaded by the author.
Authors must submit the material in electronic format together with the article through Editorial Manager. Authors must organise the supplement as follows:
Title page
Supplementary figures/tables
Supplementary methods
Supplementary figures and tables require a title and concise, descriptive legend as in the main text.
4.4 Graphical Abstracts
Authors of Original and Review articles are required to submit a graphical abstract as part of the article, in addition to the text abstract. The graphical abstract should clearly summarize the focus and findings of the article, and will be published as part of the article online and in print. Ideally, the graphical abstract is not a duplicate of another figure in the paper but a simplified schematic with minimal text. High quality graphical abstracts are considered for a cover image. The graphical abstract should be submitted for peer review as a separate file, selecting the appropriate file-type designation in the journal’s online submission system. The file should be clearly named, e.g. graphical_abstract.tiff. |
