My background is analogous to you, a non-211 undergrad degree with a just above-average GPA and a decent grad degree with a below-average GPA. No publication and no strong recommendation. I have sent out more than a hundred applications to open positions based in Europe and been invited for an interview for more than ten times, while no contract has been eventually offered to me even though I have been at the final stage for around five times. I would suggest you do not invest too much time in applying for employment-based PhD positions since the difficulty of such positions is rather higher than general PhD scholarship. And writing e-mails to inquire about the employability isn't an effective strategy per se if you don't have your own funds and you don't mean to direct yourself towards CSC application. Normally in Europe, if they do not advertise any position, that implies they do not have a fund for recruiting new PhD. Also, to be granted a scholarship in Australia, you often should have a first-class grad degree. And you should always keep in mind the visa problem.
Hereby is a bit of hands-on tips:
1. Try your best to seek reputed scholars for writing a strong recommendation letter on behalf of you.
2. Sift through all structured PhD programs that provide funding opportunities in your fields and write a very good SoP.
3. Excellent grades of IELTS and GRE should, of course, make your application competitive. |
