Bio: Dr. Wei Victor Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. This year, he has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor (tenured; effective July 2020). Before joining the academia, he worked as a geotechnical engineer in Canada’s Arctic Region, focusing on Arctic mining projects composed of rock/soil mechanics, ground freezing, and geothermal modeling. His current research interests include the development of cement-based materials and thermalmechanical modeling in the mining industry.

Graduate Student Vacancies (Two):

Research Topic 1: Applying innovative cement-based composites to the mining industry
Starting time September 1, 2020
Academic Requirement:
1.Undergraduate GPA > 3.5 (or equivalent; 85%); AND
2.Holding (or will hold) an MSc degree; AND
3.Proven publication record (i.e., peer-reviewed journal paper)
4.English Requirement: IELTS - overall 6.5; at least 5.5 on each test band; OR 5.TOEFL- overall score of 90; at least 21 on each skill area
5.Targeted Discipline Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering (construction materials)

Research Topic 2: Applying machine learning techniques to the mining industry
Starting time September 1, 2020
Academic Requirement:
1. Undergraduate GPA > 3.5 (or equivalent; 85%); AND
2.Holding (or will hold) an MSc degree; AND
3.Proven publication record (i.e., peer-reviewed journal paper)
4. English Requirement: IELTS - overall 6.5; at least 5.5 on each test band; OR TOEFL- overall score of 90; at least 21 on each skill area
5. Targeted Discipline Mining Engineering or relevant engineering disciplines

Applicants are encouraged to submit a package including their curriculum vitae, academic transcripts (both undergraduate and graduate), and representative publications to my email address ( victor.liu@ualberta.ca ). In this email, please use the following subject naming convention when submitting your package:

Mining PhD_ applicant name_Topic #
Example: Mining PhD_ John Smith_Topic 1

All packages will be carefully considered (including students from general engineering background). However, only candidates screened for a writing task (followed by an interview) will be replied due to the large email volume. Thank you.
