美国俄亥俄州肯特州立大学(Kent State University)航空工程学院电子信息工程系 认知机器人与人工智能实验室Cognitive Robotics and AI Lab (CRAI)招收1名全额奖学金博士以及2名硕士和2名实习生。博士硕士2020年春季入学; 实习生2020年全年时间入驻;欢迎优秀候选人申请。

实验室简介
CRAI实验室(主页https://ruiliurobotics.weebly.com)由刘博士于2019年在肯特新成立,旨在开展世界级的机器人认知研究 --- 给机器人和人工智能系统设计“大脑”(基于AI算法,认知科学, 心理学 和脑神经科学的认知模型),从而让机器人与人类无缝地合作。我们的愿景是,通过认知模型,机器人系统具有自我意识和自我行为诊断能力,也可以理解人的注意力和环境里的潜在风险,并且与人类和其他机器人系统建立信任关系。机器人应用包括:人--无人机/集群合作,日常辅助机器人,医疗人工智能系统和智能制造。

研究方向
1. 人工智能支持下的机器人认知建模 (AI-Powered Robot Cognition Modeling)。
人工智能(深度学习,博弈论,计算机视觉)和心理学模型的融合,革新机器人的学习控制方式,以类人的视角理解人和环境,并且具有自主的问题分析能力。
-信任(trust)。人和机器人,机器人之间的信任,从而使合作更加可靠和灵活,适应复杂环境。
-安全/危险意识(safety/risk)。为robotics/AI系统设计安全意识,支持安全的计划和合作方法。
-注意力和顾虑 (attention and concern)。人和robot/AI分享注意力交流顾虑,自然有效的沟通。
-自我意识 (self-awareness)。自我学习和自我行为诊断。
    -常识的积累和分享(commonsense learning and sharing)。
   
2.无人机集群编组和多体机器人系统(multi-robot/uav systems)
多体强化学习,深度学习,自动控制论支持下的自适应编组和任务规划,包括地面移动目标跟踪,地面空中配合,区域警戒,复杂地貌下的营救。涉及到的研究有集群行为的自我纠正, 容错的集群系统, 人和集群的配合。

3.人机交互
关注实用型的人机协作系统的设计,使用机器学习和用户行为研究来解释人的意图和行为纠正,促进人和机器系统在思想层面进行融合。涉及到的应用问题有抓取,轨迹规划,自然交流。

4. AI可解释性研究.
从机器人的角度,分析模型模型的学习重点,推理决策的依据,防护机制和模型蕴含的社会准则,从而设计安全可靠的机器人和AI系统。

研究方向1-4均涉及AI模型包括:GNN, CNN, adversarial learning, GAN, active learning, LSTM, meta learning, multi-agent reinforcement learning.

候选人背景
预计博士生将参与上述一个或两个研究方向,并有顶级文章产出。具有以下背景的候选者优先考虑。
1.具有强的学习动力。
2.PhD要求具有硕士学位(或者优秀本科生)。学位或研究背景是robotics, AI, CS, EE, Control, automation, information systems.
3.理解机器人控制,机器学习,无人机模型和有扎实数学基础。
4.有机器人,无人机和人工智能方面的项目经验; 有文章发表的候选人优先考虑。
5.有机器人操作系统(ROS)的使用经验; 熟练使用一种编程语言:python,matlab或C ++。
6. 优秀的英文读说写能力; 优异的托福和GRE成绩。

附:2020年暑期实习生情况总结。
2020年7月到9月,一共有5位优秀的暑期实习学生加盟实验室,这也是CRAI史上第一批学生。合作完成了两个项目, 共同一作完成了2篇顶级文章投稿或草稿 (ICRA2020, IEEE Trans on Human-Machine Systems),后续工作实习生们会在2019年底完成并投稿约3篇顶级文章。

PI BIO:Dr. Rui Liu is an assistant professor in the College of Aeronautics and Engineering (CAE), Kent State University, OH. He directed the Cognitive Robotics and AI lab (CRAI). Rui finished postdoc training in Carnegie Mellon University, the Robotics Institute, School of Computer Science, doing research about AI-powered robot cognition. He got the PhD degree in Colorado School of Mines. Before that, He was graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China and worked as a research engineer in the Chinese Academy of Science. He has finished more than 20 high-impact publications and patents. He currently serves as a committee member or reviewer for more than 15 journals/conferences, including leading AI/robotics conference AAMAS and ICRA. In leading robotics conference IEEE ICRA 2015 and IEEE RO-MAN 2019, his work was nominated as best-paper awards.

One fully-funded Ph.D. position, Two summer interns and masters, in Cognitive Robotics and AI Lab, Kent State University, USA
Applications are invited for two fully-funded Ph.D. positions and several master and summer interns within the Cognitive Robotics and AI Lab (CRAI) of the College of Aeronautics and Engineering, the Kent State University at Ohio USA, in Spring 2020.

Lab Mission
The CRAI Lab is newly established in 2019 by Dr. Liu (homepage https://ruiliurobotics.weebly.com/), aiming to conduct world-class cognitive robotics research -– designing the “Mind” for robotic and AI systems for seamless cooperation with a human. Robot mind is cognitive models based on AI algorithms, cognitive science and neuroscience. We envision that with cognitive models, robotics can have self-awareness and self-behavior diagnosis, also understand human attention and environmental risk, and can build a trustworthy relation with humans and other robotic systems. The applications include Human-UAVs teaming, daily assistive robots, medical AI systems, and intelligent manufacturing.
Research directions
1. AI-Powered Robot Cognition Modeling.
The combination of artificial intelligence (deep learning, game theory, computer vision) and psychological models, innovative robot learning control methods, understanding people and environment from a human-like perspective, and has independent problem analysis capabilities.
- Trust. The trust between people and robots, robots, so that cooperation is more reliable and flexible, adapt to complex environments.
- Safety/risk awareness. Design security awareness for robotics/AI systems, support secure planning and collaborative approaches.
- Attention and concern. People and robots/AI share attention and communication, and naturally communicate effectively.
- Self-awareness. Self-learning and self-behavior diagnosis.
    -Commonsense learning and sharing.
2. multi-robot/uav systems and UAV Swarm.
Multi-agent reinforcement learning, deep learning, adaptive learning and task planning supported by automatic cybernetics, including ground moving target tracking, ground-air coordination, regional alerting, and rescue under complex landscapes. The research involved has self-correction of cluster behavior, fault-tolerant cluster systems, and the cooperation of people and clusters.
3. Human-computer interaction
Focus on the design of practical human-computer collaboration systems, using machine learning and user behavior research to explain people's intentions and behavioral corrections, and to promote the integration of human and machine systems at the ideological level. The application problems involved are crawling, trajectory planning, and natural communication.
4. AI Transparency.
From the perspective of the robot, analyze the learning focus of the model, the basis of the inference decision, the protection mechanism and the social norms implied by the model, so as to design a safe and reliable robot and AI system.

Research directions 1-4 all involve AI models including GNN, CNN, adversarial learning, GAN, active learning, LSTM, meta-learning, multi-agent reinforcement learning.


Attachment: Summary of summer 2019 internships.
From July to September 2019, a total of 5 outstanding summer intern students joined the lab, which is also the first batch of students in the history of CRAI. The cooperation completed two projects and completed two top-level article submissions or drafts (ICRA2020, IEEE Trans on Human-Machine Systems). The follow-up interns will complete and submit about three top articles by the end of 2019.

Candidate Preference
The Ph.D. students are expected to involve in one or two research directions listed above, with top-tier publication outcomes. Candidates with the following backgrounds are preferred.
1. Highly self-motivated.
2. Master degree (or excellent undergraduate) in Robotics, AI, CS, EE, Control, Mechatronics, Automation or Information Systems.
3. Concrete knowledge on robot control, machine learning (CNN, RNN, DRL, GAN), UAV models and math.
4. Hands-on project experience in robotics, UAV and AI; publications in Robotics and AI will be a plus.
5. Experience in Robot Operation Systems (ROS); Skilled in one programing language: python, matlab or C++.
6. Excellent English in reading, writing and speaking; for internationals, need Good TOEFL and GRE score.
