Two PhD student positions are available in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at University of California, Riverside under the supervision of Dr. Yun Shen. Dr. Shen will start an assistant professor position in July 2020. Her work aims to tackle the challenges at the nexus of water, air, and health. The research goal is to elucidate the transmission of pathogens in engineered water systems and built environment and develop the control strategies accordingly. The PhD students will work on the projects in
1) characterizing biofilm composition, morphology, mechanical properties, and viability in response to anti-microbial materials and other environmental stresses (funded by NSF nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1929144);
2) identifying the risk factors of pathogen aerosolization through water use events and tracking the sources of pathogens;
3) elucidating the interplay between environmental factors and pathogen persistence, virulence, and infectivity;
4) assessing the health risks caused by pathogens associated with water reuse practice.
A combination of gene sequencing, microscopic imaging and spectroscopy, and surface characterization tools will be applied in the future research.
Prospective highly motivated students with a B.S. or M.S. degree in Environmental Engineering, Microbiology, Bioengineering, Environmental Sciences, and other related fields are encouraged to apply. Preferred candidates will have research experiences in water treatment, environmental microbiology, aerosol science, molecular biology, or material science. The candidate should also have good communication skills and be capable of working with a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative team.

Minimum requirement:
GPA: 3.2 on a 4-point scale
GRE: 310
TOEFL: 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based), 80 (internet based)
IELTS: overall score of 7, with no individual section score less than 6

the deadlines for fall admission are:
December 1st for priority financial support consideration for phd applications.
January 5 is the last date for guaranteed financial support consideration. phd applications received after this date will be considered as funds are available.
