PhD Student Positions in Advanced Bio-based Multilayer Polymers
Dr. Ehsan Behzadfar at Chemical Engineering Department of Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada is seeking qualified and high-caliber PhD students, starting from September 2019.
The fellows will focus on the following areas of the project:
i) Develop advanced functional multilayer products by incorporating responsive layers with engineered structures - The focus will be on the use of biodegradable polymers such as lignin. The successful candidate will design and develop novel fabrication methods for multilayer polymer production. This includes material development, set-up design and development, process optimization, and testing both chemical and physical properties. The materials and process need to be optimized for higher performance under various practical environmental conditions. Having the experience in polymer science and technology is an asset.
ii) Investigate and model the structure-process-property relationship of the fabricated advanced multilayer products (i) in simple and complex geometries; (ii) in linear viscoelastic (LVE) and non-linear viscoelastic (non-LVE) regions; and (iii) adjacent to elastic- and plastic-walls, by employing advanced analytical tools and constitutive equation modeling. The focus will be on the use of biodegradable polymers such as lignin. Having the experience in interface science and rheology is an asset.
The successful candidates are expected to lead independent research as well as contribute to research with an interdisciplinary team of researchers, working with industry partners, and contributing to funding and commercialization. The duties also include regular knowledge dissemination to the team and funding agencies. The salary will be offered based on the departmental general salary.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
• Must possess a M.Sc. in surface chemistry, polymer engineering, polymer processing, chemical engineering or in relevant field.
• Must possess a knowledge and experience of polymers, analytical characterization techniques and rheology.
• Highly motivated, goal-driven, and passionate about solving problems.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Excellent capability to work in a team and independently.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
Selection Process
Please send your cover letter, academic CV, and list of references as a single PDF file with subject line “PhD - Advanced Bio-based Multilayer Polymers Project” to Dr. Ehsan Behzadfar (behzadfar@lakeheadu.ca). Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately until filled.
