Doctoral Student for the 5G Edge Computing Enhanced Augmented Reality project
The University of Helsinki is an international scientific community of 40,000 students and researchers. It is one of the leading multidisciplinary research universities in Europe and ranks among the top 100 international universities in the world.
The Department of Computer Science (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/computer-science), which is part of the Faculty of Science, is a leading Computer Science research and teaching unit in Finland. The research themes of the department cover machine learning and algorithms, computer networks and distributed systems, software systems and bioinformatics.
The Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Sciences, University of Helsinki invites applications for a
Doctoral Student for the 5G Edge Computing Enhanced Augmented Reality project
Background and aim of the project
The 5G Edge Computing Enhanced Augmented Reality project aims at designing platforms and protocols for optimizing Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) within a 5G infrastructure. MAR traffic is extremely constrained in bandwidth and latency as MAR aims to provide the user with a seamless experience through highly unstable networks. Aiming at minimizing the impact of the network on the overall latency perceived by the user, the research will utilize novel transport protocols and edge computing architectures to accommodate the needs of MAR applications on wireless networks. A student can join our group to address these challenges for the project:
How to minimize the capture-to-display latency experienced by MAR applications at the network, transport and application layers?
How to efficiently utilize the available computation resources in edge computing architecture for MAR, especially when considering the mobility of users?
How to synchronize all elements with different deadlines and constraints?
Funding and requirements
The project in funded by the Academy of Finland. The salary is based on the University of Helsinki salary system. For a doctoral student, the starting salary will be 2200–2700 euros/month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The position is full-time and the first contract period can be up to two years (including a 6-month probation period).
Candidates should have a MSc in one of the following fields: computer science, communications, mathematics, statistics or another relevant subject by the time of the start date; proven ability to publish in top conference proceedings and journals; and a clear and well-developed strategy for outstanding future research that has the potential to result in world-leading publications.
