The Department of Ocean and Naval Architecture Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Memorial University seek to appoint one Postdoctoral Research Fellow with expertise in autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) and sensor fusion. This position offers the opportunity to engage in international collaboration, to work with state-of-the-art robotic hardware and software for AUVs, and to benefit from excellent support to produce original research contributions in the peer reviewed journals and leading conferences. The successful candidate should have relevant research experience and a keen interest in a number of research areas, including (but not limited to):
- Control for robot autonomy
- Autonomous underwater vehicles and field missions
- Motion planning and navigation
- Machine learning for autonomous robots
- System integration, including ROS
- Sensor characterization and development
During the program, the Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to:
- Play a leading role in field tests, motion planning, control and sensor fusion for applications of AUVs for oil spill reconnaissance and delineation in open and iced waters
- Provide leadership and mentoring to PhD and Master¡¯s students
- Be involved in planning and attend group meetings with professors and researchers from different research institutions to follow-up the project progress and discuss research directions
- Publish papers in peer reviewed scientific journals and present at well-recognized conferences
It is expected that the successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
Essential:
- Hold a PhD in ocean and or naval architectural engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science or a relevant field.
- Programming experience in C, Matlab, Python, or another suitable language .
Desirable:
- Experience using ROS and/or MOOS -IvP.
- Experience with field tests with AUVs.
