PhD: Additive manufacturing of multi-functional biodegradable metallic implants
Published Deadline Location
yesterday 15 Oct Delft
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Biomaterials and Tissue Biomechanics Section in the Biomechanical Engineering Department of TU Delft (Biomaterials & Tissue Biomechanics) is seeking a PhD candidate with a strong interest in performing cutting-edge research in the area of additive manufacturing of biodegradable metallic biomaterials. This PhD position is part of the project “Development and Streamlined integration of 3D printing technologies to enable advanced medical treatment of its widespread application” (3DMed). The project aims to improve the affordability and large-scale accessibility of medical treatment using 3D printed devices. Seventeen partners in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and France participate in this cross-border project. In addition, fourteen observer partners from university medical centers, hospitals, software houses, medical device/instrument manufacturing, and regulatory advising and services are involved.
The PhD position involves developing innovative additive manufacturing methods to fabricate multi-functional biodegradable metallic materials for bone substitution. The main challenge is to design, synthesize and fabricate 3D printable feedstock materials and then develop post-processing techniques to achieve the desired multi-functional properties of porous biomaterials with controlled topological and pore characteristics. The fabricated porous biomaterials will be characterized in structure and a whole range of properties relevant to orthopedic applications.
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should have a strong academic record with a solid background in materials science and engineering, or a related discipline (preferably biomechanical engineering, biomedical engineering and inorganic chemistry). The applications must be self-motivated and committed to experimental research in a university laboratory setting. The applicants must have a set of hands-on skills related to material fabrication and characterization and a strong desire to develop new skills and research experience. Experience in additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy and corrosion characterization is a plus. The applicants are expected to be able to cooperate with other members of an interdisciplinary team in the Section and relevant project partners. The applicants must be proficient in both written and spoken English, and possess excellent presentation and communication skills.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
TU Delft offers a customizable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. An International Children’s Centre offers childcare and an international primary school. Dual Career Services offers support to accompanying partners. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities
As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School.
