Director of the Medical Engineering Research Facility (MERF)

Up to twelve PhD positions are available in engineering and materials. Candidates from other academic backgrounds, however, will be considered. Prospective students should contact Prof. Cameron Brown cp.brown@qut.edu.au .
Successful candidates will be offered the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge, understanding and expertise in their chosen field of research. Technical development will be coupled with extensive professional development towards an academic or R&D career. Members of the Brown Group will benefit from access to flexible and bespoke experimental facilities, high-level scientific expertise, and access to a range of local and international collaborators. Equipment available and related to these projects includes scanning probe microscopy (AFM, PFM, KPFM, and nanomechanical modes); electron microscopy; nonlinear optical microscopy; Raman, UV-Vis and NIR spectroscopy; high-performance computing facilities and image datasets; and a range of manufacturing/synthesis equipment.
Projects will be undertaken in the Brown Group laboratory. Recently moved from the University of Oxford to QUT in Brisbane, Australia, taking advantage of collaborations throughout the UK and USA, the group combines advanced experimental and computational techniques to provide new insights into the structure-function relationships in biomedical materials. The Brown Group is also involved in a number of translational activities, including the development of new optics-based diagnostic devices, scalable nanostructured surfaces and 3D constructs for regenerative medicine, new tools and approaches for surgery, and automated analysis/interpretation techniques for medical imaging.
