Subject : Development of the CHORD method for the multi-scale characterization of aluminum alloys with Scanning Electron Microscopy

A doctoral position in materials science is available at the MATEIS laboratory of the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) in Lyon, France. The position will be available beginning October 2019 for a period of three years.

The thesis will be carried out within the framework of the CHORDellium project, which brings together two academic partners: the Georges Friedel laboratory attached to the Ecole des Mines de Saint Etienne(42) and the MATEIS laboratory attached to INSA Lyon (69). The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the company CONSTELLIUM, which manufactures aluminum alloys, and whose research center is based in Voreppe (38).

The aim of the project is to optimize the CHORD method, which allows to obtain MEB orientation mappings, for multi-scale characterization of aluminum alloys with complex microstructures.

The successful candidate will benefit from a highly motivating scientific environment, with access to state-of-the-art facilities. As part of the CHORDelllium project, the candidate will first have to become familiar with the CHORD method. This one, is currently in development, and is coded in Python language. The method will then be optimized for the characterization of texture on a sub-centimeter scale, then for precipitation at a nanoscale and finally for the characterization of structural defects such as dislocations. The doctoral student will be based in Lyon and brought to exchange throughout the project with the various partners.

Key words: Aluminum alloys, microstructure, texture, precipitation, orientation mapping, EBSD, dislocations, Python programming.

We are looking for a highly motivated person who holds an engineering degree or a Master in Materials Science. An experiment in electron microscopy would be a plus, and an experiment in programming (Python for example) is highly recommended.

Subject: Development of a automatic method to characterize the dislocation with the Scanning Electron Microscope

A doctoral position in materials science is available at the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) of Lyon, France, in the laboratories Mateis and Lamcos. The position will be available beginning January 2020 for a period of three years.

The thesis will be carried out within the framework of the DISCO project, whose aim is to optimize a method of automatic characterization of dislocations to SEM. This method will allow easier and faster observations of the microstructures of interest, and data more representative of the studied materials will be generated. These data will then be injected into micro-mechanical models allowing a prediction of the evolution of physical parameters (elastic limit or hardening) as a function of the selected thermomechanical treatments.

The successful candidate will benefit from a highly motivating scientific environment, with access to state-of-the-art facilities. As part of the DISCO project, the candidate will first have to become familiar with the MEB dislocation imaging methods and the CHORD approach. This approach makes it possible, under certain conditions, using appropriate image processing, to quantitatively characterize a dislocation structure. The first year of the thesis will be dedicated to the optimization of this approach. Then, the method will be validated using a quantitative comparison with currently existing techniques (MET, DRX, EBSD ...). Finally, specific microstructures will be characterized, on Ni base alloys, and the results obtained will be injected into existing micro mechanical models, to improve these models, then quantify the contribution of the developed method.

Key words: Ni-base alloys, microstructure, dislocation, plasticity, cartographiesorientation, Python programming.

We are looking for a highly motivated person who holds an engineering degree or a Master in Materials Science. An experiment in electron microscopy would be a plus, and an experiment in programming (Python for example) is highly recommended.
