Postdoc Research Associate and Ph.D. Student Openings at Clarkson University:  Mechanoresponsive Polymeric Materials

Position Overview and Qualifications
One postdoctoral scholar position and two positions for Ph.D. students with teaching assistantships are available in the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science at Clarkson University. The successful candidates will work in Dr. Xiaocun Lu’s laboratory focusing on mechano-chemistry and mechano-responsive materials. Specifically, the research projects involve a mechanistic understanding of mechano-activated chemical bonds as well as the development of mechano-sensitive polymeric materials and self-healing materials.

The postdoc candidate is expected to 1) be highly self-motivated and capable of conducting independent research with a strong academic record; 2) have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or closely related fields, conferred within the last five years or expected in 2019; and 3) demonstrate expertise in organic and polymer synthesis, supramolecular self-assembly, or synthetic polymeric materials. Extensive research experience with fluorescent sensors, nanoparticle functionalization, non-Newtonian fluids, or computational modeling (DFT or MD in polymer systems) is a plus. This position will be available in April 2019 and will be supported up to two years with a possible extension. The stipend will be commensurate with experience.

For the graduate applications, highly motivated students with a B.S. or M.S. degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or closely related fields are encouraged to apply. Solid research training in organic and polymer synthesis, supramolecular self-assembly, nanoparticle functionalization, non-Newtonian fluids or computational modelling is a plus. Both Ph.D. positions will be available in the fall semester of 2019 and will be funded for up to five years.

Applicants should have excellent written and oral communication skills. English proficiency requirements can be found at http://internal.clarkson.edu/art ... issions/tests.html.

About the Lu Research Group at Clarkson University
The Lu Research Group (www.luresearchgroup.com) at Clarkson University is an interdisciplinary and collaborative group with a research focus on the development of stimuli-responsive polymeric materials. Dr. Xiaocun Lu recently joined Clarkson University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science in the fall of 2018. He received his Ph.D. in polymer science at the University of Akron under the guidance of Professor George R. Newkome. Before taking a faculty position at Clarkson, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Professor Jeffrey S. Moore’s group at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His major research interests include mechanoresponsive materials, supramolecular self-assembly, and smart delivery systems.

Clarkson University is a private research university founded in 1896. Its main campus is located in Upstate New York in the village of Potsdam which is a classic college town. Potsdam is family friendly with a modest cost of living. More information could be found at https://www.clarkson.edu/life-potsdam.

How to Apply
Postdoctoral applicants should submit 1) a cover letter discussing your interests in the position, a brief description of your research experience, and career goals; 2) a detailed CV with a full publication list; 3) representative first-author publications; 4) contact information of three references to Dr. Xiaocun Lu (xlu@clarkson.edu). Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Graduate applicants should send 1) a complete Curriculum Vitae with a list of publications (if available); 2) contact information for three references; 3) transcripts, and 4) a brief description of your research background and interests to Dr. Xiaocun Lu (xlu@clarkson.edu). All the applicants are also required to submit an official application online and receive full admission to the Graduate Program at Clarkson University (http://www.clarkson.edu/graduate/chemistry). Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the positions are filled.
