Surface features and chemistry have profound influences on material functionalities such as self-healing, photovoltaics, fuel cells, drag reduction etc. The research project focuses on solid/liquid and solid/bubble interactions under different circumstances. The work will take the advantage of the cutting-edge 3D printing technology, which can be easily and efficiently used to design and fabricate structures of virtually all kinds of shapes, with sizes down to ～100 nm. The research aims at a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of liquid drops/bubbles on patterned surfaces in air or in fluid field. We are interested in understanding how the geometrical parameters of topographic structures and the corresponding friction coefficient influence the wetting dynamics of liquids with different surface tensions and viscosities, and the substrate/bubble interaction under water or in fluid field. This work may also include extensive and in-depth exploration for functionalization and applications of specially designed surfaces. We are also interested in the development of highly complex composite soft rubbers with quantum dots or nanoparticle fillers, this work consists of developing nanoparticles and quantum dots that are compatible with elastomers or gels, and tuning the functionality and mechanical property of the composites. This will help to develop smart artificial muscle for soft robotics.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a strong background in surface science, fluid dynamics and flow characterization techniques, and deep interest in interdisciplinary studies. A successful candidate should hold a PhD degree at the start of the contract in physical chemistry, chemical engineering, applied physics, material science or related disciplines. The postdoctoral fellow will also be required to assist with the general running of laboratory instruments in ISR and the supervision of research students.
The candidates should be a good team player and willing to share ideas and experiences, and will work with collaborators from multidisciplinary research groups. Research experience in fluid dynamics, surface science, microfluidics and soft lithography, soft materials, quantum dots, metal nanoparticle/graphene preparation, composites processing and characterization is advantageous. You should be capable of working under your own initiative and with a multidisciplinary research team, presenting your work to our industrial partners and at international conferences, so strong communication skills are required.
