    As part of the agreement, successful students will receive a scholarship that covers the tuition fee, an annual living allowance that includes overseas student health cover, a return airfare to London and visa application fees.

    Up to 100 K-CSC scholarship awards will be available for the 2018-19 competition

    DEADLINE FOR THE 2018-19 COMPETITION: 12 JANUARY 2018, 23:59 GMT

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Satisfy the selection criteria relating to current study and employment as set out by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) on their website;
    Be due to commence a full-time MPhil/PhD research degree programme at King’s College London in the 2018/19 academic year and by no later than March 2019;
    Agree to return to China upon completion of their studies and/or research;
    Have submitted all the required application material/information (as instructed in the ‘Application Process’ section below);
    Obtain an admissions offer for a doctoral programme at King’s by no later than 2nd March;
    Have met the English language requirements for their chosen research programme by no later than 2nd March;
    Also follow the separate local application procedure within China and submit the required documentation to the CSC by its stated deadlines (see http://www.csc.edu.cn for further details)
    Please note that:

    Students who have already commenced their doctoral degree at King’s are not eligible

    These scholarships cannot be held on a part-time basis

    Distance learning programmes are not eligible

    Professional doctorate degrees are not eligible

    Joint PhD programmes are not eligible

    Students applying for the King’s International PGR Scholarships (with code: 1819-PGR-INT) cannot also apply for the K-CSC Scholarships. Students must choose one or the other (see application process for further details)

    Students who fail to apply to both King’s and the CSC, as appropriate, will not be eligible
    These scholarships cannot commence prior to September/October 2018

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    How to apply

    Application Start: November 2017

    Application Deadline: 12 January 2018, 23:59 GMT

    Applications will be open until 12 January 2018 at 23:59 GMT sharp

    Please follow the instructions below.

    Applicants who fail to apply as instructed below will not be eligible for consideration.

    INSTRUCTIONS: you MUST:

    Apply to King’s College London for a research degree programme using the online admissions application (https://apply.kcl.ac.uk/)*
    On the funding part of the KCL Admissions Application Form, ensure you tick the box at item 5 (Award Scheme Code or Name) and enter the code 1819-KCSC
    Submit a separate application to the CSC by its stated deadline and following the local application procedures in China. Note that the local CSC application process is completely separate to King’s processes and their deadlines will also differ from ours.
    *Students who have already applied for admissions, and those who previously applied but deferred entry to 2018/19, will be required to update their application for 2017/18 with the code 1819-KCSC by the same deadline of 12 January 2018, 23:59 GMT.

    PLEASE NOTE: Chinese students are eligible to apply to King’s China Council Scholarships as well as the King’s International PGR scholarships; however, they will not be considered for both schemes and therefore will need to decide at application stage whether they enter EITHER ‘1819-KCSC’ OR ‘1819-PGR-INT’ as the code in the ‘Award Scheme Code or Name’ funding box.

    PLEASE BE AWARE that material from your admissions application will be extracted and used as part of the assessment/selection process; therefore, it is our expectation that your admissions application will be complete with supporting references and transcripts by the application deadline of 12 January 2018. It is your responsibility to ensure that this information is provided in time.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Selection process

    Once the application deadline has passed, the Admissions Office and the Centre for Doctoral Studies (CDS) Office will gather and record the details of all the applications received that state 1819-KCSC as the Award Scheme Code.

    The Admissions Office and the CDS Office will check the eligibility of all applicants, and all applications that are deemed eligible will be circulated to faculties for assessment.

    Assessment of applications will be based on:

    Evidence and strength of academic qualifications gained (minimum entry qualification is an undergraduate 2:1 and/or a higher degree), and where applicable, professional qualifications and/or relevant experience;
    Strength of the research proposal
    Match of the applicant’s interests with his/her potential supervisor
    Academic faculties will put forward their shortlist of candidates to the CDS office who will then check that the candidates have met the English entry requirements for their programme and obtained an admissions offer. Only those that have met these conditions by the 2nd March will be eligible for nomination to the CSC.

    Once the university’s list of nominations is confirmed, the CDS office will notify applicants of their nomination status and submit the nomination decisions to the CSC by no later than 20 March, which is the CSC’s nomination deadline.

    The CSC will conduct a separate selection process based on the applications it received directly within China, and will evaluate candidates according to CSC requirements and priorities. The CSC will make its final decision about the awards towards the end of May, and provide the CDS office with a final list of scholarship recipients.

    IMPORTANT NOTE: Students can only be successful with a K-CSC scholarship if they have been chosen/supported by BOTH the King’s College London Centre for Doctoral Studies and the China Scholarship Council.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Announcement of results

    All results will be announced via email in the first instance.

    Candidates who are deemed ineligible by the CDS office for a K-CSC award will be informed about their ineligibility.

    Eligible applicants who have been considered for nomination by King’s will be informed about the outcome of their applications around early-mid March 2018.

    Final decisions lie with the CSC, and will be confirmed towards the end of May/early June 2018. As soon as the CDS office is aware of the final outcome, they will contact the successful candidates. Unsuccessful candidates will also be informed at this point.

    Candidates who are successfully offered a K-CSC award will be asked to provide a decision on acceptance/decline by a given deadline. If a successful candidate fails to respond by the given deadline or declines the offer, their award offer will automatically be withdrawn.

    CONDITIONS & REGULATIONS OF FUNDING

    •        Awards are offered on the condition that the candidate has met/will meet all the conditions required for acceptance by his/her chosen Faculty of study.

    •        Each award will be made on the assumption that there are adequate resources for the research project, and that the candidate’s proposed course of study is acceptable to the department/division and Faculty in which they wish to study.

    •        New awards offered in 2018 are valid only to commence in the 2018/19 academic session; deferral of an award to a later academic session is not permitted.

    •        Awards granted for the 2018/19 academic session cannot be used retrospectively for whole or part of any earlier session.

    •        Awards cannot be transferred to another institution.

    •        An award-holder must be registered as a full-time student for the length of their research degree.

    •        Award-holders must comply with university regulations to submit their thesis within the required time frame.

    •        If an award-holder wishes to make a change to: a) the research project, b) the supervisor, or c) department/division specified on their application form, he/she must first seek approval from the Centre for Doctoral Studies office. The award-holder would need to outline the changes proposed and provide confirmation of i) the department/supervisor’s support of such changes, and ii) the tuition fees (if they are different from the amount attached to the original research project). Failure to inform the Centre for Doctoral Studies office of such a change may impact on the continuation of an award.

    •        If an award-holder needs to take time out from their studies due to illness, accident, fieldwork or for any other serious cause, they must report this as soon as possible to the relevant Faculty Office/ Record Centre to request an interruption of studies. The award-holder must also inform the Centre for Doctoral Studies office to request a temporary suspension of award funding. If the Centre for Doctoral Studies office is not informed and continues to pay for a student who is absent from their studies, a refund will be sought for overpayment, and it may also impact on the continuation of an award.

    •        If an award-holder: i) already holds another funding award from an organisation; or ii) is otherwise financially supported by another organisation; Or iii) is to secure another funding award later on during the course of their research degree programme, and the Centre for Doctoral Studies considers the fund(s)/award(s), or other form of support, to be sufficient to cover maintenance and/or the programme tuition fees, the award-holder will not be permitted to hold these funds/awards concurrently. The rule to remember is that if two funds/awards cover the same amount e.g. both provide funds to cover full tuition fees, they cannot be held concurrently.

    •        Award-holders who receive funding from alternative source(s) will be required to disclose details of those funds to the Centre for Doctoral Studies office so that an assessment can be made regarding any potential overlap of funding.

    •        Applicants must be aware of all the additional financial commitments involved when attending their chosen course of study at King’s. Awards are granted on the understanding that the award-holder will take responsibility for any additional expenses incurred for the duration of study.

    •        An award can be terminated at any time under the following circumstances:
    o        If an unsatisfactory progress report on the award-holder is received from his/her supervisor/department
    o        If an award-holder ceases to be a full-time research student
    o        If an award-holder is no longer required to pay fees at the full international research student rate
    o        If an award-holder receives other overlapping funding

    •        Awards covered by these conditions may not be used to cover writing-up fees.

    •        Students who receive a China Scholarship Council funded award will also need to abide by any terms and conditions set out by the China Scholarship Council,
