Thank you for your interest in our graduate program and my laboratory in particular. I am open to accepting a student in 2018, although since decisions about how to fill the available graduate admissions slots are made by the program as a whole, rather than by individual faculty members, I am not guaranteed of getting one. Currently I am investigating how various types of models (dynamic food web models, Markov matrix models, cellular automaton models, neutral models, multispatial cross-correlations) can be applied to natural communities in order to make predictions about various types of environmental perturbations (removing species, changing disturbance), and testing the approaches experimentally in river and rocky intertidal systems. My most recent work in this area is focusing on ocean acidification, as we have discovered that we have one of the few data sets on ocean pH through time available to bring to bear on the problem. I have also been working on a project experimentally examining the relative roles that different ecological and genetic processes associated with small population size have on extinction rates, and another project examining the response of river food webs to large-scale manipulations of the riparian zone. My students develop their own independent projects rather than having projects that are assigned by me, although their projects revolve around general themes or systems in which I am interested. For example, the projects of my students have included 1) developing and experimentally testing size-structured food web theory in midwestern ponds, 2) evaluating the dynamics of Lyme disease and how they are mediated by interactions with the surrounding ecological community, 3) determining the effects that varying biodiversity in different ways has on ecosystem function in pond communities, 4) documenting the dynamics and community consequences of invading species, 5) testing the consequences of pulsed versus chronic disturbance/stress on tidepool communities, and 6) studying omnivory and interaction strength in intertidal food webs in New Zealand. Given your interests and past experience, you may be a better fit for the Commmittee on Evolutionary Biology graduate program (evbio.uchicago.edu), of which I am a part. I should also mention that funding for international students is difficult to for us to obtain. I therefore encourage you to apply for any China-based fellowships that you may be eligible for.
